Responsible and Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools in Academic Writing Discussed

An online event titled 'Responsible and Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools in Academic Writing' was organized by the Project Development Cooperation and Coordination Office of Nevşehir Hacı Bektaş Veli University in collaboration with the Academic Writing and Support Office on Thursday, 16 January 2026 at 20:00.

The guest speaker of the event was Assoc. Prof. Dr. Harun Şencal from the Department of Economics at Istanbul 29 Mayıs University. The primary aim of the event was to raise awareness about the ethical, responsible, and conscious use of artificial intelligence tools in academic writing processes and to present theoretical and practical perspectives on how and within what limits these tools can be used in academic production.

The event discussed topics such as the role of AI‑supported writing tools in academic production, the use of AI in relation to academic integrity, plagiarism and originality, opportunities offered by AI tools and the ethical risks they may bring, national and international approaches to the use of AI in academic work, and examples of good practices for academics and graduate students.

During the event, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Harun Şencal emphasized that AI tools should be positioned as supportive instruments in the academic writing process and that they do not eliminate the academic responsibility of the author. Instead, conscious use within the framework of academic ethical principles is essential.

The presentation also evaluated the opportunities provided by AI in areas such as text generation, literature review, language editing and structuring, while also drawing attention to issues such as ethical violations, data security, copyright and academic transparency.

The event was open to the public and was followed with great interest by academic and administrative staff as well as undergraduate, master's and doctoral students.
