Information on the Compulsory Preparatory Programme Proficiency Examination for the 2026–2027 Academic Year

(For Students of the Departments of English Language Teaching and International Relations with English as the Medium of Instruction)

Dear Students,

The compulsory English proficiency examination administered to students of the Departments of English Language Teaching and International Relations (English medium) at the beginning of the academic year, before preparatory instruction begins, consists of 3 (three) sessions. The sessions cover the following:

Session 1: Grammar and Vocabulary + Reading
Session 2: Listening and Writing
Session 3: Speaking

The first session consists of multiple-choice questions assessing students’ English grammar and reading skills.

For English Language Teaching students, this session includes 15 multiple-choice questions, 3 cloze tests (15 questions) and 10 sentence-completion questions assessing English grammar and vocabulary, together with 20 multiple-choice questions assessing English reading skills.

For International Relations students, this session includes 40 multiple-choice questions assessing English grammar and vocabulary and 20 passage-based questions assessing English reading skills.

Session 1

Session 2

The second session consists of English listening and writing sections.

This session includes 25 listening comprehension questions in single-answer multiple-choice, multiple-answer multiple-choice, gap-fill and/or matching formats. Each recording is played to students 2 (two) times consecutively, and students answer comprehension questions about the recording. The types and number of questions in the listening section may vary from one examination to another.

The writing section has 2 (two) parts. The first part assesses students’ paragraph-writing skills. Students may be given a situation, such as an email, a request for information or a complaint, and asked to write a response to it.

In the second part of the writing section, students choose one of at least two topics and write a paragraph (International Relations students studying in English) or an essay (English Language Teaching students).

The first and second sessions are held on the same day, with Session 1 in the morning and Session 2 in the afternoon.

Session 3

The final session, the speaking section, takes place on the day after the written examination. Students are called in turn into the designated examination rooms announced on the website. Students may take the speaking examination individually or in pairs.

First, students are asked general questions. Next, each student is given a topic and has 1 (one) minute to think about it and make notes on the paper provided. When the preparation time ends, the student speaks about the topic for 1 (one) minute, using their notes. Finally, in Part 3, students are asked for their views on one or more topics and discuss the topic with the examiner in a question-and-answer exchange. This session lasts approximately 8–10 minutes per student.
